Looting and arson at the house of late poet and professor Ananda Mohan Rakshit

The house of late poet and professor Ananda Mohan Rakshit was not spared from the widespread violence and persecution of minorities in the country after the fall of the government. Along with the whole country, minority persecution has been seen in Chittagong also.

 

It is known that on August 9, 2024, the houses and places of worship of the Hindu community were attacked, looted and set on fire in several places in Chittagong. Around 7 pm on this day, several terrorists attacked the homes, businesses and temples of the Hindu community in Momin Road area of ​​Chittagong. At one point some miscreants broke into the house of the late social activist, poet and professor Ananda Mohan Rakshit, situated at J. M. Paradise and ransacked it.

 

Meanwhile, they searched for Ananda Mohan Rakshit’s wife Lucky Dutta and son Shubha Rakshit and threatened to kill them. At one point, when the local neighbors tried to stop them, the miscreants set fire to the house. A nearby neighbor, who did not want to be named, said the miscreants were around 15-16 in number and attacked several other houses and businesses nearby. At that time, the nearest police station was called for help, but no one responded. In this incident, 2 people were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

 

Incidentally, poet Ananda Mohan Rakshit has always been vocal against communal and fundamentalist groups through his writings. Moreover, he was the adviser of the local Awami League and involved with various social and cultural organizations. He was also the religious affairs editor of Bangladesh Hindu Foundation. It is to be noted that he died on 7th September, 2023.

 

His son Dr. Shubha Rakshit is a renowned cultural personality and directly involved in Awami League politics. Shubha Rakshit is currently living in Sweden and Ananda Mohan Rakshit’s wife Lucky Dutta is staying with her son in Sweden. Ananda Mohan Rakshit’s entire family is currently suffering from extreme insecurity as a result of  facing death threats.
